About our Club.....
Longford Vintage Club was established in January 2005, its conception was an idea of Harry Mckenna and Kevin Phelan(Honorary President). To date we have over 70 Members from all backgrounds and walks of life with our youngest member being just 10years old!
Our meetings are held on the second monday of every month in THE BENT ELBOW in Drumlish Village,Co longford.
We urge every member to attend our meetings as they are very informative and we also welcome members views and input at such meetings
Objectives...
The key focus of the Longford Vintage Club is to bring together like minded people who have a common love and interest in Vintage cars and Motorbikes , Vintage Tractors and farm machinery and vintage transportation of any type.
One of our main objectives is to find as many vintage vehicles etc, that are from Longford town and county that would have been in prominent use in our yesteryears, and that would be remembered by our older members who can pass their stories down to the younger generation of club members to ensure the love of our Heritage is not forgotten.
Another important focus is to restore such vintage vehicles etc, and bring them back to their former glory as they once were.
For example we have recently restored a Foden 8 Wheeler Flat Bed Truck .This lorry is believed to been built between the years 1970 to 1973. The british army had ownership of this lorry which was used as an ordnance lorry up until the year 1979, the army then had its own vehicle registration numbers and this is why the lorry had to be reregistered as 1979 when removed from military service.
In 1979 the lorry was sold by the British army. When it was sold it was converted into a water tanker, subsequently it was sold again and bought by the Longford County Council in 1998, to be used by the Fire Services Dept in Longford town, the Fire Services retained ownership of the lorry until 2006 when it was donated to the Longford Vintage Club.
Charity...
Longford Vintage Club is a non profit organization, we hold and have held Vintage Tractor and Car runs for various local and national charities, we welcome any invitation from other clubs to take part in their fund raising, Tractor runs, Car runs and Field days, we also welcome any other clubs who wish to support us in same such activities, We are willing to travel to any such events.
For example in 2006 we raised €3,000 for the Acorn Community Project based in Longford Town, and in 2007 we raised €6,400 for the Marie Keating Foundation for Breast Cancer Awareness.
